
Rod Kight is a graduate of Furman University, where he received a BA in Philosophy. In addition to philosophy, he studied classical and jazz guitar.
Rod received his law degree from The University of South Carolina School of Law. Rod is a member in good standing of The North Carolina State Bar, The North Carolina Bar Association, and The North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is active in the Bankruptcy Sections of both the Bar Association and the Academy.
Rod Kight is an experienced bankruptcy lawyer who has represented individuals and businesses in over 1000 cases. Rod has been certified as a Specialist in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law by the North Carolina State Bar. Rod has also been certified as a specialist in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law by the American Board of Certification. Rod is a frequent presenter at bankruptcy seminars to lawyers and accountants. He was a contributing author to The North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice Manual, 6th Ed. (2007), the authoritative source for the practice of bankruptcy law in North Carolina. Rod has taught bankruptcy law in the paralegal program at Cecil’s College, formerly in Asheville.
Within the Bankruptcy Section of the Bar Association, Rod serves on the Bankruptcy Council. The Council, which includes attorneys representing Debtors and Creditors, meets several times throughout the year to discuss legislative proposals and issues affecting the Bankruptcy Section of the Bar Association and the practice of bankruptcy law throughout North Carolina.
In addition to spending time with his two children, Rod enjoys playing and listening to music, hiking, reading, and writing. He is drawn to Western North Carolina because of its vibrant and unique community. He enjoys its diverse and energetic mix of people, art, and world views.
Rod believes that community service is important. He serves on the 28th Judicial Bar’s Pro Bono section, where he is a Co-Chair of the consumer protection section. Rod also serves on the Board of Directors for OnTrack (formerly Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Western North Carolina). OnTrack is a non-profit, United Way agency that offers many community programs to assist debtors in crisis and to educate the public about using and managing debt wisely. Rod also believes in assisting clients who cannot afford legal services. He serves as a bankruptcy referral attorney for both Pisgah Legal Services and Sylva Legal Aid. Based on his active pro bono work, he has been a “featured attorney” at ProBono.net.
Rod has also served as both a volunteer mediator and board member at The Mediation Center, a nonprofit organization devoted to “win-win” conflict resolution. He has completed the NC Superior Court mediation course.
